What is being proposed?

Construction of a 50MW battery energy storage system (BESS) facility on just under 5 acres of land which is currently used as a paddock. The development comprises:

  • a huge metal “barn” (60m x 15m and over 6m tall) which will house the inverters

  • electrical transformer units,

  • storage facilities for spare batteries

  • a Customer Switchroom

  • a Distribution Network Operator (DNO) Switchroom.

  • The site will be surrounded by 3m high fence and CCTV cameras.


Where is the proposed development?

  • On land just to the East of the access road which runs up to the sub-station and very close to the existing battery facility!  See the map below:

Who is the developer?

The developer is Renewable Connections (see also their proposal for a solar farm at Violets Lane).  Renewable Connections is a business which focusses on “investors looking for attractive financial returns”. 

Renewable Connections is owned by Armstrong Capital Management Limited (“Armstrong”) which is owned by 9 private investors.  Armstrong has recently entered into a joint venture with Copenhagen based European Energy A/S with a view to funding 500 MW of solar developments and battery in the UK.

How far advanced are these proposals?

Renewable Connections have just applied to East Herts District Council for permission to build the BESS.  The planning application number is 3/22/0806/FUL.
